Summer Adventures: CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretation Center

Editor’s note: WNCT.com has a new limited weekly series called “Summer Ventures”. WNCT.com wants to help families find a way to get out and enjoy summer without having to spend a lot of money. We’ve found a few great places you can visit throughout eastern North Carolina, many of which are only a few hours away. So come back every Friday for another place to explore as part of WNCT.com’s Summer Ventures series.

KINSTON, NC (WNCT) – Kinston isn’t just home to the Down East Wood Ducks. There is also a lot of history in the city.

One of the most popular historical sites is the CSS Neuse. This was part of the ill-fated Confederate attempt to regain control of the lower Neuse River and recapture the city of New Bern during the Civil War.

Living Local: Kinston and its history, culture

People can see the actual CSS Neuse that was burned by the Confederacy so the Union wouldn’t capture it. Plus, there are also fun things for the kids to do. They can participate in scavenger hunts around the museum to learn how eastern North Carolina was involved in the Civil War.

Throughout the museum, people can view exhibits that tell the stories of the people of Kinston during the Civil War.
