Shooting at Boise shopping center: at least 2 killed and 4 injured
Two people were killed and four others were injured, including a police officer, in a shootout at a shopping center in Boise, Idaho on Monday.
Police Chief Ryan Lee said Boise officers responded to reports of shots fired at Boise Towne Square shopping center at around 1:50 pm and that “at least one person was shot.”
When police arrived, Chief Lee said at a press conference on Monday, officers found an individual matching the description of a suspect and exchanged gunfire immediately afterward, injuring an officer .
Chief Lee said the suspect was taken into custody. Police believe there was only one attacker and that there was “no continuing threat or danger to the community as a whole from this incident,” Chief Lee said.
“We really can’t at this point talk about any motivation behind this, or anything else that might impact the investigation,” he said. “It would be quite too premature to make any of these assumptions.”
Police did not release the names of those killed, injured or the suspect. Chief Lee said his officers were working with investigators and hospitals to brief the families of the victims.
The condition of the four injured was not immediately known.
At the press conference, Mayor Lauren McLean of Boise said those still at the mall Monday afternoon were safe and the town was safe.
“Thinking of those who were injured today, my heart goes out to those who took refuge there, to those who saw this crime, to those who were not sure of seeing a loved one again, or who knew that they had someone who cared in the mall, ”Ms. McLean said.
The mayor thanked the traders and others inside the mall during the shooting who “reacted so quickly to take care of the people who were there”.
“You have shown in a difficult and chaotic time how much you care about yourself and what you are willing to do to support and care for strangers,” she said.
The police chief and the mayor did not answer questions during the press conference.
Governor Brad Little of Idaho said the Twitter that those involved in the shooting were in her prayers and that the state was ready to help Boise Police investigate the shooting.
Diane Green told The Idaho Statesman that she was at the Apple store inside the mall when she heard a “horrible crashing sound”.
“It was as if a metal window had blown out and it echoed throughout the mall,” she told the newspaper. “Most of us there were surprised at first, then we immediately heard five or six shots. “
Ms Green told the newspaper that people from the store took refuge on the reservation, where they stayed for about two hours.
The two-story Boise Towne Square Mall has over 150 stores and restaurants and is surrounded on the outside by other businesses.
In a statement released Monday evening, Brookfield, the management company of Boise Towne Square, said it was working with authorities as they investigate the shooting.
“We are grateful for their prompt response and continued partnership,” the management company said of Boise Police. “It is devastating for our entire community, and our hearts go out to the family and friends of the victims during this unimaginable time.”
The mall was closed on Monday evening and the management company said it will remain closed on Tuesday.
